| | Many times in the realm of rock 'n' roll, you will hear someone who works for THE MAN tell the singer of a famous band, "Listen, buddy. You don't need those guys. You're the star! You're the one they want." But all too often, the singer needs the band as much as the band needs the singer. This is not the case with Nash Kato. Listening to his solo work makes you wonder why Urge Overkill didn't split up following 1993's Saturation. His solo work boasts a broad range of songwriting styles that traverses (with believable ease and style) glammed out, hip shaking Power Pop to updated, post-retro Classic Rock songs. An impressive softer side refreshingly exposes Kato's evolving interest in diverse songwriting -- and he makes it look easy. This new direction actually sounds a bit influenced by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham's Moments From This Theater. Don't worry, kids -- he still lets loose with the epic songs of pure rock power, but his soulful singing is much more refined now; he has the inflections of a seasoned musician who has finally come to understand finesse. Kato's music is moving, passionate, and saturated with the same kind of rootsy soul that once made women cry when hearing Otis Redding. Kudos to Kato for musically growing up. |
